Radiology & Your Pet
Radiology is a form of medical imaging that helps both diagnose diseases or injuries as well as guide the treatment of these conditions. It is one of the most useful diagnostic tools in our arsenal. At Alpha Veterinary Services, we use radiography to get a closer look at your pet’s condition.
Radiography, commonly known as X-rays, uses a small amount of radiation to take pictures of your pet’s bones and other dense tissues, such as muscles and tendons. If your pet has eaten something they should not have, or if you suspect that your pet has broken a bone, radiography can help us locate the object or the injury and guide our treatment.
Modern radiography has many benefits:
- Completely pain-free
- Non-invasive
- Clear, detailed images
- Easily sharable if your pet needs to see a specialist
Because your pets cannot tell us what is wrong, we rely on radiology to understand what might be wrong with your pet. Radiology is an advanced diagnostic technology that can be very illuminating.
X-Rays and Ultrasounds
X-rays provide still images of your pet’s muscles, bones, and other dense tissues. Because it uses radiation to capture the images of your pet’s insides, we do not recommend using X-rays for delicate tissues or developing fetuses. Instead, we would recommend using ultrasonography or ultrasounds, which use high frequency soundwaves to penetrate soft tissues. Ultrasounds cannot penetrate bone, but they are useful for real time imaging of organs or developing fetuses.
While radiography is non-invasive and pain-free, there are some cases where we may need to sedate your pet to get a clear image of their injury. If your pet is nervous or in pain, it can affect our ability to take a clear picture, as X-rays result in still images. We will let you know if we recommend putting your pet under for an X-ray before we begin.
